CHAPTER TEN

* * *

Missy and Echo drove over to the new house to see what progress had been made, with Echo’s precious baby Jasmine gurgling happily in the back seat. Spencer and Chas were off dealing with the witnesses to the Elvis death, Izzy had agreed to man the counter at Cupcakes in Paradise for a couple of hours, and Joyce Rutledge, the Ivy-League educated bookworm who managed the bookstore and candle shop that Echo owned in a funky retro building downtown, had things well under control so the new mama could take some time for herself.

After the friends checked out the house, they’d have lunch out and maybe even do a little shopping, depending upon Jasmine’s cooperation.

“That must’ve been awful, seeing that man fall to the stage like that,” Echo shook her head.

“Oh, I can’t even begin to tell you. The sound that his head made when it hit the floor…” Missy shuddered, unable to even finish the sentence. “I felt so bad. I had no idea that he would die, I was hoping it was just nerves or something.”

“Most of those impersonators do it for a living, they probably don’t even get nervous after awhile.”

“Hmm, I never thought of that. Well, here we are,” Missy announced proudly, turning into her private lane.

“Wow, they really trimmed things back, you can actually get in the driveway without trees and shrubs scraping the car,” Echo observed. “What a difference!”

Spencer’s crew had been hard at work, and new stucco was being applied to the exterior, now that the roof and all of the windows had been replaced. Inside, the house had been basically stripped down to the studs, and some of the new drywall had already gone up, once the plumbing and electrical in certain sections had been updated.

“This is actually starting to look like a home again,” Missy smiled.

“And a gorgeous one at that,” Echo agreed, patting Jasmine’s back as she slept soundly in her front pack.

The stairs were blocked, but they heard the sounds of construction activity taking place in the upstairs bedrooms and library.

“Let’s go take a look at the pool and yard,” Missy suggested, leading the way.

“As long as nothing crawls on me,” Echo shivered.

“Don’t worry, I’ll protect you,” Missy teased.

“Aww…thanks, I feel so much better now,” Echo replied dryly, making a face.

The pool had been emptied, repaired and cleaned thoroughly, and new gunite was being applied to the surface, along with glass tiles on the sides. The brush and debris had been cleared from the huge back yard, and Missy held her hand up to her eyes to shield them from the sun as she looked into the distance.

“Hey, do you see that?” she nudged Echo.

“What?”

“Doesn’t it look like there’s a structure down there? Like a little house or something?”

“Now that you mention it, it does look like there’s something behind those trees on the right,” Echo nodded.

“You up for a walk?”

“What do you mean?”

“Let’s go see what that building is. My curiosity is killing me,” Missy grinned.
